Just as a quick aside, I really need to figure out how to reduce the dust that gets onto my negatives. It’s really bad. I’d be willing to bet it’s a combination of dust on the negatives and dust on (in?) the scanner. Aargh.

Well, that’s the drawback of scanning black and white – can’t use dust removal software. Although I did notice that you’re using SilverFast. What version? LaserSoft has a version of SilverFast 6 that comes with SRD(TM), which removes dust and scratches on black and white film. It’s been out a while, and I hear it works well.
I find it incredibly slow and cumbersome to use. Granted it could be that I just don’t know what I’m doing. I switched from Vuescan to LaserSoft in an effort to speed up the scanning process. I would say that I was only partially successful. It’s probably the part of the process I dislike the most. Blech!
